Flight Arrivals at Gran Canaria Airport

Gran Canaria Airport is one of Spain's largest airports, as its passenger traffic is recorded at over nine million per annum. It is also the busiest airport serving the Canary Islands. The airport is recognised as the Gando Airport, due to its location in the Bay of Gando, Gran Canaria, or informally, as the Las Palmas Airport. LPA is Gran Canaria’s official airport code that distinguishes it from all the other airports of the world. Gran Canaria is a famous location for millions of local and international tourists, as it features golden beaches, a perfectly warm climate throughout the year and many other interesting attractions, which include its interesting volcanic landscapes. Passengers arriving at Gran Canaria Airport will find a number of transport options for reaching their next destination on the island.

The main airline carriers arriving at Gran Canaria Airport include Binter Canarias, Naysa, Islas Airways and Ryanair, as well as Spanair, Air Europa, Iberia and Vueling, with flights from other Spanish airports, such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Malaga. The airport is a hub for the first four airline companies mentioned, which arrive from mainly airports found on the other six Canary Islands, known as Tenerife, La Gomera, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma and El Hierro. Ryanair, one of the most popular low-cost airline carriers in the world, also offers flights from Birmingham, the London Airports of Stansted, Luton and Stansted, Manchester, Liverpool, Knock, Pisa, Hahn and Brussels-Charleroi. Additional airline carriers offering flights from a number of destinations to Gran Canaria Airport include Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways, Air Berlin, Condor, Finnair, Cimber Sterling and Jetairfly.

Passengers will arrive at Gran Canaria Airport on the ground floor of the single terminal building, in one of the three airport zones depending on from where their flight originated. Zone A is for flights from other European Union destinations, and Zone B is used for all international flights that have not come from an EU country. The third zone at the airport is dedicated to arrivals from all inter-island flights, and certain regional flights as well. Both the arrival and departure areas of the airport are separated in a similar fashion. Passengers can check the monitors at the entrance to the hall to find out from which carousel to collect their luggage. Each carousel is marked by the number and origin of the flight.

In the unfortunate scenario whereby a passenger’s luggage has been lost or damaged, the incident should be immediately reported to the counter of the Airline Company concerned, or handling agent of the company. The various handling agent offices are found in the arrivals area, and the necessary steps will be taken to recover lost baggage, or to possibly compensate passengers for damaged goods. Belongings in transport are the responsibility of the airline in use, and not Gran Canaria Airport.

Spain is one of the many countries that is now known for signing the Schengen Agreement, and passengers arriving or departing between two Schengen countries may travel freely across the internal borders. Domestic flights are also considered to be Schengen flights. No free circulation is available for passengers passing from a non-Schengen country to a Schengen country, or visa versa. Schengen countries include Germany, Italy, Denmark, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Hungary, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland, while non-Schengen countries include Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania and the United Kingdom.

Within the arrivals area at Gran Canaria Airport, passengers will find several tour operators and travel agencies, tourist help desks and the car hire companies present at the airport, which include Avis, Hertz, National, Alamo, Sixt and Auto Europa, as well as the local car rental companies of Centauro, Goldcar, Marbesol and Record Rent A Car. Rented car is one of the best ways to move around the island of Gran Canaria, and to reach all the beaches and holiday attractions in your own time. The island has an excellent road network, with the GC-1 motorway providing direct access from the airport to the northern and southern areas in Gran Canaria. Towards the north, the capital city of Las Palmas is approximately 18 km from the airport, while many popular southern holiday resorts are about a 25 km drive.

Passengers with some time to spare at Gran Canaria Airport can browse several shopping outlets, or stop for a bite to eat at one of the restaurants. Business passengers arriving at the airport will also find conference facilities with space for 74 attendees and five speakers. Gran Canaria Airport offers a post office; banking and currency exchange services and is fully accessible for disabled passengers, with adapted toilet areas and a terminal that is free from obstructions. Passengers ready to leave the airport can also travel to their next destination by bus, taxi or private transfer, or perhaps are fortunate enough to be staying at a hotel that offers complimentary shuttle services to and from Gran Canaria Airport. The regular buses travel the length of the eastern coastline, stopping at the airport, and taxis are available from all areas of the island.

Gran Canaria Airport is the ideal arrival point at which to start a wonderful holiday in the Canaries.
